"I started listening to the podcast a couple weeks back and am loving it! I currently live in Whistler and recently graduated from Electrical Engineering Technology in Ontario where I spent a year working for electric utilities during 3 co-op terms. My second co-op I spent a lot of time working with the line crews out on the water and remote spots near Georgian Bay. I realized it would be my dream to become a powerline technician. During my third co-op I was working in the GTA and asked to spend time out with lines instead of in the office, as I was actually hired to do standards work, and I worked with the construction crew for a month. I am hoping to get hired as an apprentice out here and your podcast definitely encourages me to not give up the dream. As a female I want to eventually go into schools and share how fulfilling focusing on achieving a ticket in the trades and utility industry can be. I’m currently a yard dog, I just wanted to contact you about saying something to the younger guys that might listen to your show. I’ve herd guys talk on your podcast about becoming line man after being so old and joining the brotherhood after they have life experience etc. I just want to say that I feel like the jobs that lead up to line man are just as important and it will set some one up to be a great career lineman if they learn from the bottom of the job I think it just gets combed over. There’s line man etc. there’s also ways to get into the trade than being a cowboy and just getting In to it. I would just hope some time you could talk to a guy like me that takes care of the wire the cut outs the small things like there trucks. I started as a drafter and got hired by an engineering consultant into their transmission line department. I've been working for the company for about six years now and have been promoted to a design role in the last few years. Since that transition I've found myself becoming more interested in learning as much as I can about the industry. I don't recall how, but I ended up stumbling across your instagram page and started following it several weeks ago. I was scrolling through it recently and saw your post pop up with your interview with Peter Catchpole. It was then that I finally dove into your podcast, and I feel like it's been the important perspective I've been looking for. I am only a few episodes in and I am hooked. I appreciate the good conversation you have with your guests, and I find both your and their insights to be incredibly valuable. I know I'm not the first to acknowledge the disconnect that exists between the folks designing lines and the folks constructing them. It is really important to me to be as cognizant as I can of the constructibility of a project and it is a real challenge for me to gain that perspective. Your podcast has been a huge help in me starting to learn how to better bridge that gap. So, I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for the hard work you have put into developing this podcast. I think it's a great resource to those who are in the industry but do not have direct access to the individuals constructing the lines. "Can’t thank you enough for your podcast and the guests you’ve brought on. It’s really helped light the fire underneath me. I’m 36 and spent years and years wondering why most “normal” construction jobs were boring to me. The few that were more engaging usually paid low wages and no benefits. I’ve been spinning wheels for almost 2 decades depressed that I might just be one of those guys that never finds a job they enjoy. Two weeks ago I woke up at 2am in a panic, wondering why I can’t find an exciting career and if I’ll just be punching a clock until I die. Lol...pretty dismal. I started looking into stuff like the railroad and mining , but then it dawned on me that two of my buddies are linemen in different parts of the country and I’d never heard them complain about being bored or broke. Or regretting pursuing line work. I reached out to them individually and it has ignited the spark. Here in the south, some of the IBEW locals are few and far between. And they’re definitely not up to the standard of what many IBEW guysin other parts of the country are used to. I spent a year as an apprentice indoor wireman. It would take several pages to articulate the train wreck of a journey that ended up being. But I don’t hold that grudge with the IBEW as a whole. All that being said, it seems like my best option to get the ball rolling is going to line school, especially since there’s one 2 hours away. Just wanted to thank you for all the info you’ve presented. I’ve been eating it up. It’s cool to find something in the trades that makes me say damn I wanna do THAT. Instead of “yeah that looks like it sucks but the pay ain’t bad.” Lineman seem like my kinda folks and I’m thrilled to start the journey. Cheers man."
